In the spirit of everyone loves an underdog, I would like to offer the unveiling of the NE 42nd Avenue Business Association’s new logo. Our street is starting from ground zero in many ways, starting up a new group particularly of people with business interests is not too dissimilar from starting a business. When we started our Portland Swimwear Shop Popina we had many of the same immediate issues to deal with such as developing a logo/identity and getting on the map.
Our board has been meeting regularly for the last year getting administrative matters in order such as bylaws, etc. We quickly put our focus on taking down the old, tired banners that were flapping in the wind and not giving the proper face our street deserved. After interviewing a few graphic designers we chose Jen Kilcoyne, a great local graphic designer. The final logo was a great collaboration between our great board group of NE 42nd Avenue and Jen.
I love to participate in creative processes with professional creative people. I was a bit nervous going into a design process with a committee (a working group of 10 people weighing in on the direction of the logo). Jen did a great job of drawing out ideas from the group then developing our new identity from our input. Personally I love the street banners with the open for business. For me it acknoledges the current tough business environment and pokes fun at our selves a little for being the underdog.
The logo has three iterations, one to be used for window decals for businesses:
This logo below will be used on street banners. We are applying for a grant to the APNBA for funds to hopefully install these new banners in the spring!
And this logo will be used for letterhead:
So wish us good luck on the grant, I can not wait to see the new banners up it will really spice up the street, and if you have been thinking about opening a business or have a friend who is looking, come to NE 42nd Avenue. We have very affordable commercial rents and great location!

NE Portland Sports Bar - NEPO 42 is a great new Sports Bar on NE 42nd Avenue. NEPO 42 is a great place to check out a Blazers Game, it is a comfortable non smoking environment and offers great food. NEPO 42 is about five blocks north of Popina the Porland Swimwear Boutique featuring Retro Swimsuits.
The owner Matthew got into the Bar/Restaurant business in a round about way. He developed a successful catering business and was looking around for a kitchen space to lease out. Because NE 42nd Avenue is still a little off the radar for retail he was able to get into the space at a price that was cheaper than just having a kitchen space to support his catering business. The result is a comfortable NE Portland Sports Bar that has awesome food. I highly recommend the Jalapeno Poppers which are made from scratch - very hard to find.

NE Portland Pizza - Bob’s Rocket Pizza is located three doors North of Popina the Portland Swimwear boutique. Bob’s has a long history on NE 42nd Avenue. Initially the shop was owned by Bob who in turn sold the business to Tim and finally sold the business to the current owner Joe (the store manager) and his brother. Interestingly both Tim and Bob still work at Rocket Pizza although Bob less than Tim. Rocket Pizza offers NE Portland Pizza Delivery and you may even get a delivery in their new electric car - very cool.
Since Joe has taken over the shop has has made several great changes including improved seating, lighting, updated equipment and a new cooling system , all make for a more enjoyable stay as you are picking up your pizza.
At this time Joe does not have more than a few seats to accommodate pick up customers, but Joe and his brother have big plans to expand their humble pizza joint into a larger space that will accommodate seating. In fact a new structure has already been built, complete with a glass garage door which will allow for indoor/outdoor seating when the weather allows.
We have been very impressed with the heart and soul Joe has put into giving Rocket Pizza heart and soul and look forward to their continued expansion and success.
But how about the pizza…….well it is very tasty, my favorite is any of their meat pizzas, they do not skimp on toppings also their taco pizza is very good as well as their veggie. Really though the best value and deal is their lunch special where you can get an individual sized pizza for $3.50, very tasty and the price is right on the money.

NE Portland Bakery is right across the street from Popina the Portland Swimwear Boutique. Delphina’s began in the back kitchen of Delphina’s Restaurant which was making its own bread nightly for its dinner customers. Three partners, Al Edelman, Michael Cronan, and Stan Nowack, had a dream to take this bread to the streets, and soon, a delivery truck rolled out in the early morning hours to bring hot, freshly-baked loaves of this bread closer to more people. The Mistell’s soon joined this team, in 1985, and the bakery thrived. The restaurant is long gone, Carolyn Mistell is sole owner of Delphina’s Bakery, and the Portland tradition lives on and includes a whole line of artisan breads and breakfast pastries, still baked and delivered fresh daily. Over the years these breads and pastries have been shaped by a passionate love for tradition, excellence, and quality of product and of customer service.
Delphina’s strives that when you bite into one of their crusty baguettes, traditional signature sourdough boules, rich buttery scones, delicate rum raisin brioche rolls, or our famous Portland buttermilk coffee cake you will feel the history of off-the-beaten-path travels to bakeries around the world including Paris, Italy’s Cinque Terre, and even Beijing, and brought back home to Portland.
Delphina’s has a Bakery Café on NE 42nd Avenue where you can sit down and enjoy a sandwich made on one of their fresh baked loaves of bread or a cup of Illy coffee with one of their many delicious breakfast pastries. Delphina’s add’s no preservatives to their products and use the highest quality ingredients available.
In addition to Delphina’s Cafe on NE 42nd Avenue you can find Delphina’s breads and pastries at Zupan’s Markets, Trader Joes, Peet’s Coffee and many more fine stores, cafes, and coffee shops from Vancouver to Corvallis. Many people in NE PDX know Delphina’s from the Hollywood Farmers market where they have a booth.

NE Portland Mexican Restaurant Ole Frijole offers something rarely found in a taqueria. It is clean, affordable and very good food.
Ole Frijole allows you to take a little escape to Mexico without leaving Portland and yes it is Cheap Mexican Food in Portland, affordable but also very very good.
Ole Frijole is a family run restaurant, it is not uncommon to find the father of the family working with his son. The food at Ole Frijole is very tasty and runs the gambit from Shrimp Soup which is delicious and a meal in itself to tacos, burritos and even American hamburger which I have not sampled but looks really good. Although all Mexican food has very similar ingredients Ole Frijole really knows how to but their own signature stamp on what they do.
Ole Frijole is located on the corner of NE Killingsworth and NE 42nd Avenue so you can reach it by riding the Tri-Met #75 line.
The address of Ole Frijole is
4125 NE Killingsworth
Portland, Oregon 97218
Ole Frijole is right up the street from Popina Swimwear, the Portland Swimwear Boutique.
