Fashion Show Portland - Swimwear!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Popina will be having a Swimwear Portland Fashion Show at Vinideaus a NE Portland Wine Bar on Fremont tonight @ 7pm!  There are a number of great reasons to go to this event tonight:

1) Vinideaus is an awesome wine bar.  The owner’s Dominique (a native of the South of France) and his American Wife Dianne have created a little slice of the South of France for us to enjoy in Portland.  Not a very easy thing to pull off but they have done so in a very organic way.

2) Vinideaus has A/C and Portland is projecting a record all high time temperature high of 108.  How about some refreshing chilled white wine?

3) Beautiful women wearing Popina Retro Swimwear Fashions.

4) There will be a belly dancing segment.

Sunday Parkways Sale

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Sunday Parkways is happening today Sunday July 19th in Northeast Portland.  The route is a loop that goes as from NE 17th to NE Ainsworth to NE 47th and hits Alameda.  Part of the route will cross NE 42nd Avenue at NE Going, one block from Popina Swim the Portland Swimwear Boutique.

To celebrate Sunday Parkways Popina will offer 20% off for anyone making a purchase who rides on their bike and mentions this blog posting or twitter posting.  Be forewarned we do not have a lot of opportunities to lock up bikes yet (we are due to get new bike racks within the next couple of weeks).  However my husband Will said that he will be available for look out duty to keep an eye on all bikes parked in front of the shop that can not find a suitable lock up space.

Look for the Popina A-Frame sign that points you to the left when you cross NE 42nd Avenue!

Tri-Met Line #75

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Tri-Met Line #75 is a great north south bus route in Portland. So how about a shout out for the bus line that goes right in front of our Portland Swimwear shop Popina. From Woodstock to Hawthorne through Hollywood all the way to Popina Swim. Some personal highlights of the 75 line starting in Hawthorne:

Popina Swim is an easy 20 minute bus drive from the Hawthorne business district, home of the Bagdad Theater and Dosha Salon. The Bagdad is an awesome historic restoration, owned by McMenamins Portland’s hero’s of preservation served with their home brew a movie and a slice of pizza. If you really want to treat yourself to escape your worries without getting out of town, try getting a massage at Dosha. Their massages are very reasonably priced, be sure to show up early (at least 45 minutes) to enjoy their second floor soaking pool and steam room, it is transporting. As you cruise North out of Hawthorn you will pass Laurelhurst Park which has a beautiful duck pond and lots of room for running your doggie.

Bagdad Theatre Portland Bagdad Theater

Next you will arrive at the Hollywood Transit Center, across the street is Trader Joe’s an awesome new supermarket, adjecent to the Hollywood Transit Center is 24 Hour Fitness, also pretty darn new. 24 Hour Fitness is a brutal process to sign up, sort of like your worst used car nightmare, but once you make it through the process the gym is very nice, the instructors for the classes are great. Huge downside is parking - but if your on the ol’ 75 you get front door service. If you crane your neck towards downtown as you cross Sandy Boulevard you may catch a glimpse of the Hollywood Theater. Where Bagdad shows popular second run movies, The Hollywood shows first run indie flicks, I have seen many movies at the Hollywood and have only been disappointed once by a very flat comedy, anyway, this historic theater was chopped up into three theaters I believe in the 1960’s which is very unfortunate, but the upside is more movie selection. The theater is owned by the not for profit Film Action Oregon which helps promote independent film and education in Oregon.

Then up the Alameda Ridge into the Beaumont Wilshire Neighborhood, if you get off right at the Fremont stop you can get a killer coffee at Ristretto Roasters for some micro brew coffee (they roast their own beans). The other must visit is Jim and Patty’s coffee for some great baking including their unreal calorie busting breakfast sandwiches, try the sausage and egg biscuit the first time you visit then try the bacon and egg the next, if you ever move past the breakfast sandwiches try the pastries then hit 24 hour fitness.

Back on the bus heading north you are almost at your destination Popina. On 42nd Avenue be sure to visit Delphina’s for great freshly baked breads, Roses Ice Cream for homemade ice cream and Rocket Pizza for some awesome pie, all within a block of Popina Swim.

Why not take the bus to Popina, take your time, and enjoy the ride!

Trio Subtonic Portland, Oregon Jazz at Vinideus in Beaumont Wilshire

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Trio Subtonic of Portland, Oregon will be playing their fun, funky Jazz at Vinideus in Beaumont Wilshire tonight.  Trio Subtonic recently played at the Mt. Hood Jazz festival and features bass, keyboard and drums.

Trio Subtonic makes music to get stuck in, to chew on, and yes, to groove. Simultaneously uplifting and weighted, expansive and collapsing, they reach across genre lines, incorporating melody and meter in an array of styles and controlled improv-isations. Dormant sounds and lush subterranean landscapes unfold; the party begins, and infectious grooves take root.

I first heard Trio Subtonic at Last Thursday on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland.  Walking by, I heard a groove that I could not stay away from, then I settled in and stayed for awhile.  What a great treat to have them play at my favorite wine bar less than one mile from the Popina Bathing Suit Shop.

For those of you who to not live in the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood, it is worth the trip to check out a great up and coming Jazz band in an extremely intimate and cool setting at Portland’s best neighborhood wine shop Vinideus - the wine shop is like beaming yourself to the South of France, lots of people try to pull off this feel, Vinideus does it effortlessly.

Chemical Free Sun Tan Lotion

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Chemical Free Sun Tan Lotion is featured at Popina Swim Portland’s Bathing Suit Boutique.  All of the sun screens we offer are personally tested by Popina’s Designer, Pamela Levenson who has sensitive skin that is prone to rash in the sun.  This discomfort has given Pamela the desire to seek out great chemical free tanning products that provide protection and are skin friendly.  The additional benefit of our chemical free lotions is that they are great to use for your tropical trip for snorkeling or scuba diving, our products are safe for sensitive coral ecosystems.

Grant Pool, Portland, Oregon

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Summer never really feels like it has arrived until you can jump in the pool and swim. Right down the street from Popina Swim & Sport is the ultimate community pool, Grant Pool. Grant Pool is open to the public and is adjacent to Grant High School in Northeast Portland. The City of Portland offers swim lessons for children lead by pool lifeguards, many who are Grant High School students. Be sure to check the swim schedule before you go to be sure it is an appropriate time to go for what you are looking to do. Depending on the time of day there is anywhere from 1-6 lanes of lap swimming open if you are looking for a work out. The lanes can get crowded some times and I have definitely experienced some lane range, from swimmers who are either too slow or too fast for others in a shared lane, but if you time it right (a good time to go is close to the end of a lap swimming session) the lanes are less crowded, realistically best you can ever hope for is sharing a lap swimming lane with just one person. My best recommendation is to allow time to chill out in a lounge chair with a book and wait till a lane thins out a bit. It seems like an unwritten law that everyone seems to get the idea to swim at the same time you do, so let them go first! :)

Every day has the fun party quality of the employee pool hour from Caddyshack where kids can bring their favorite floatation device, participate in a swim lesson, go down the slide and sometimes even jump off the lifeguard chair.

Save some room for a slushy from the concession stand. The opening day for Grant Pool is June 16!
